SwitchToWholeGrains is an initiative launched in 2023 that aims to highlight the incredible benefits of whole grains on nutrition, well-being, and sustainability. We want to inspire you to make these nutritious choices a part of your daily diet, not just during our 4-week challenge but all year round!
This initiative is proudly managed by the European Food Information Council (EUFIC), a consumer-focused non-profit organisation dedicated to making the science behind food and health easy to understand and accessible to everyone. We created and manage this initiative independently, with the support of the Whole Grain Initiative, of which EUFIC is a partner.
Although many European dietary guidelines recommend replacing refined cereals with whole grains, and some countries advise a daily intake of 75-90 grams, data from the Global Dietary Database shows we are not even meeting a lower recommended intake of 50 grams in 16 of the 27 EU Member States.
Similar results are seen in the UK from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey rolling programme 2008-11, where the median daily whole grain intake, calculated for each individual on a dry-weight basis, is 20 g/day for adults.
Increasing our whole grains intake can help us reach the recommended daily fibre intake of 25 grams for adults. This is essential for health and preventing many chronic diseases.
